St. Paul Street is the downtown comeback story — independent shops, a Saturday farmers' market at the Garden City Hall, cafes, bars and the Performing Arts Centre anchor. Walk it once and you'll understand why downtown sells again.

NAC is St. Catharines' artist-run centre — exhibitions, a bar, occasional gigs, and the cultural backbone of the downtown. Free to walk in. The kind of place that tells you whether a city actually has a scene.

Brock sits on the escarpment above Old Glenridge — 19,000 students, the major regional employer, and the reason real estate around it never goes cold. If you're buying in Glenridge or Western Hill, it's the gravitational centre of the rental market.

Winston Churchill is the Glenridge public high school — strong arts, IB program, solid sports. The high school that pulls in families from the leafy old-money side of the canal.

Saint Francis is the Catholic high school in St. Catharines' Old Town area — solid academics and an active student life. If you've come from a Catholic board, this is the answer.

Niagara College's main campus is in Welland, but it's the everyday commute for a lot of St. Catharines families — culinary, health sciences, trades. Worth a tour if your teen is leaning skilled-trades or hospitality.

Ridley is the historic boarding/day school in St. Catharines' Old Town — full IB, JK through grade 12, day and boarding. International-school energy, Niagara setting. The independent answer for families willing to invest.

Lakeside Park is the Lake Ontario beach at Port Dalhousie — sandy, family-friendly, with the lighthouse pier walk that ends with the Toronto skyline on a clear evening. The everyday answer to 'what should we do tonight'.

The Welland Canals Trail runs the length of the canal — quiet, flat, and the best way to actually understand what the canal does to this region. Cycle past a 740-foot lake freighter going through Lock 3; nothing else like it.

Lock 3 is where you stand right next to a Great Lakes freighter as it rises through the lock — free, weird, kind of awe-inspiring. The Welland Canals Centre is right there for the history. Bring kids. Bring snacks.

Burgoyne Woods is the big Glenridge-side urban park — forested trails, splash pad, playground, dog park and the outdoor pool in summer. The everyday answer for families on the south side of the canal.

Montebello Park is the downtown heritage park designed by the same firm that did Central Park — heritage bandshell, formal rose garden, and the venue for the Grape & Wine Festival in September. The dog-walk loop is two minutes off St. Paul.

Henley Island is the international rowing course in Port Dalhousie's old harbour — home of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta every August and an unexpectedly beautiful park space the rest of the year. World-class athletes here; you didn't know.

Short Hills is the 700-hectare provincial park on the Niagara Escarpment just west of St. Catharines — wetlands, waterfalls, the Bruce Trail and one of the few escarpment hikes locals don't all know about. Worth a Saturday morning.
